I have made it! A few days ago I cycled the last few miles through Tierra del Fuego to the ocean at Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, nicknamed ‘The End of the World.’ It has been 268 days (almost 9 months) since leaving Anchorage in Alaska to climb and cycle all the way south through the length of the Americas. I am ecstatic to get here, it has been such a focus for so long. After a crazy 24 hours of media, I have just now started to crash out a bit – the mind and body relaxing after what has been an incredible adventure. When I get back to Scotland in a few days I will write more, but for now if you would like to catch up on my finishing blog and radio/TV coverage please go to the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas.

I have heard that the transmission dates of the BBC1 documentary series about this expedition have changed from when I wrote my last blog – they will now be on Tuesdays, the 23rd & 30th March then the 6th April.

Ushuaia, the most southerly city on earth, is known as ‘Fin del Mundo – End of the World’ and it’s where my Americas expedition will end. At the time of writing this blog there are just five days cycling left! I’ve been on the road for just shy of nine months, cycled about 13,000 miles and climbed the highest mountains in both North and South America – Denali and Aconcagua. It’s been an incredible journey for me, which I have loved, but which has tested me constantly and so I am now looking forwards to the finish – it will be amazing to see friends and family again after so long alone on the road. As always check bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas for a main blog of this expedition and also the flickr, twitter and facebook links for the full story.

The BBC One documentaries of this expedition are due to be shown at 10.35pm on Monday the 15th, 22nd and 29th March, which I will confirm closer to the time. The feedback from my production team has been excellent and everyone involved is looking forwards to a great series.

I am already looking forwards to my next journey – 38 towns on a UK wide talk tour. It will be the first time that I have taken my photography, films and stories on the road to explore my own fair isles, and should be a lot of fun! To come along to your closest venue please follow the links on the homepage. Thanks to Speakers from the Edge for their organisation and to the sponsorship from Wild Fox Events, The Saltire Foundation and Koga Miyata bikes which allows this tour to happen.

I am now in Patagonia, Argentina in the last weeks of the Cycling the Americas expedition. By the time I reach Ushuaia I will have been on the go for about nine months. The last few months cycling through South America and the climb (on foot) of Aconcagua (6963m) have kept me from blogging here as I concentrated on the BBC filming and online story at bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas. However, keep checking back regularly from now on as I will soon be back in the UK and 2010 is looking like a busy year…

I have just heard that my first book ‘The Man Who Cycled the World’ was the second best selling cycling book of 2009, pipped only by Lance Armstrong. I am delighted that it continues to be so well received – I loved writing it. In March it will be coming out in paperback and then in the USA at a later date TBC.

I plan to be back in the UK late February, and then will be on a nation wide talk tour from mid-March to mid-May. This will be at 37 venues and involve an evening of my films, photography and stories. I am really looking forwards to exploring the UK like this and meeting so many people. Great to hear that venues are already selling fast – check back soon for all the details to see if I will be coming to a theatre that you can reach.

Will write more soon but for now there are still thousands of miles to cycle! Having just climbed the highest mountain in the Western hemisphere, my cycling legs are feeling the burn!

I am writing from Panama, at the end of the road for my Central American pedalling. It has been a very wet but fascinating journey through Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama with highlights like surfing on the Pacific, finding tarantulas in the rainforest at night, visiting the Ngobe-Bugle Indians and spending a night in a firestation!

Next I will be joining a cargo boat for a 60 hour voyage through the Panama canal and down the coast to Ecuador where I will start pedalling again. The following online has been incredible and growing steadily. Thanks for the tens of thousands of you who are supporting online. The most interactive way to follow is at Twitter and Facebook with regular new photos at Flickr. The full blog is at www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas

I am discovering a surprising amount of people cycling from Alaska to Argentina or vica versa! The seasons very much dictate when you can pedal into the extreme latitudes. Some people do the route in one season, like I am attempting, but many take much longer. In Guatemala, for the first time, I caught up with some cyclists who had left Alaska July 2008. Harry and Ivana, www.exposedplanet.com have had an amazing journey which in terms of speed and company I sometimes envy! In Ecuador I will also overtake the Vogel family, two eleven year old boys and their parents on route south, who set of from Alaska in June 2008. I recently wrote a blog for their site which you can read here. Their main website is www.familyonbikes.org. Lastly, at the other end of the spectrum, congratulations to Scot Napier, the nutter who left Alaska at the same time as me and who has already reached Ushuia, and in doing so breaking the Pan Americas World Record by 14 days in a new time of 126 days. If you don’t mind the odd profanity then you can read his very amusing blog here.

I am now in El Salvador, and half way in terms of distance from Anchorage, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina. It is a big milestone, and a slightly scary one as it feel like I have already been on the road a long time – and I have, over 140 days! I remain on target for an ascent of Aconcagua at the start of 2010. It took just five days to cross Guatemala after the huge 30-40 day crossings each of Canada, USA and Mexico. The best way to follow the adventure as it happens is through twitter www.twitter.com/cyclingamericas

Dominic Gill is an amazing guy who took 26 months to cycle the route I am currently on. He did so on a tandem bike, but rode solo to give the spare seat to people he met along the route. Dom recently wrote a great blog for my BBC website which captures his adventures in the world I am now in. You can read this at bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas. Doms expedition were recently shown on an ITV4 documentary and you can find out more at www.takeaseat.org

Tom Kevill-Davies, aka the Hungry Cyclist, another intrepid friend of mine, is back out on expedition following the length of the Mekong river in Asia in search of the perfect meal. Tom has already spent over two years exploring the parts of the world I am in at the moment and published his first book. To follow his adventure check out www.thehungrycyclist.com

Nearly 6000 miles into the Americas expedition and this week I am heading for the Pacific coast in Mexico. After the arid borderlands, I have recently crossed the Tropic of Cancer into more mountainous and greener terrain as I pedal across the Tierra Madre Occidental (Mexico’s largest mountain range). I have just posted a new set of photos at www.flickr.com/photos/cyclingtheamericas and the full blog is at www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas.

Congratulations to James Bowthorpe, who at 6pm on Saturday 19th September finished his 18,000 mile cycle around the world. Guinness World Records have still to verify this as a new World Record but I am sure they will do soon. Only 18 months after I set the World Record at 194 days and 17 hours I am delighted that James has taken on the challenge of the ultimate endurance cycling record. It was my dream when I set out to make this circumnavigation a coveted record, like so many other circumnavigations are. With the success of the BBC1 documentary ‘The Man who Cycled the World,’ the world cycle was suddenly put on the radar for the adventure world and I knew it wouldn’t be long before someone made a bid. I am delighted – this is a new era in endurance cycling. Gaining the World Record has opened many doors for me and I continue to do what I love, so I have no regrets about seeing it beaten. Who will be next?

People email me on a daily basis to ask for help planning their expeditions and getting started in a career like mine. I am always delighted to hear these ambitions and will reply when I can. However, I regret that I can not help as fully or as fast as I would like whilst away on full time expedition.

One graduate who has set himself a great challenge and needs everyones support is Sean. To find out about his cycle to Cape Town click on www.ridingouttherecession.co.uk

You might also be interested to read about David and Kelly who are cycling the reverse of my current expedition and blogging on www.cyclingnomads.com

Talking about a completely different sport, I wrote an article for the Daily Mail Ski and Board Magazine, October issue which is in shops now.

Lots more news soon but for now I have to go and film a volcano!

My long cycle south has taken a sudden and very dramatic cultural jump as I left North America and have headed into Central America. I have never seen such a sudden and complete change of language, people, food and customs in a single border crossing. During my crossing of the dangerous borderlands I am under escort and having to keep all my blogging information to a minimum – however, as always you can read all the updates at www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamerias.

Back in Scotland I am delighted that Drumlanrig Castle, which holds the Scottish Cycle Museum, have asked to display my world bike. If you would like to see the bike that made it 18,296 miles around the world in 194 days and 17 hours then you can find out directions at http://www.drumlanrig.com/default.asp?PageId=46. Opening times are 11am until 5pm and the bike will be there until the end of September

I am pleased to hear that my first book has continued to fly off the shelves and the feedback has been wonderful. It is a scary thing to publish your adventure! In less than five months it has gone to reprint six time!

Talking about books, a world cyclist and friend, Rob Lilwall (who I met in Istanbul during my round the world), has recently finished writing about his three year cycle home from Siberia through places like Tibet, Papua New Guinuea and Afghanistan! If you are in London and interested in these adventures then do go along and support his book and DVD launch if you can. I have heard Rob speak before and he has an amazing story. The details are…

Thursday 1st Oct, from 6pm till late.

I am writing from Arizona, a state that I have cycled through before. However, during the world cycle I was here in January and so cycling now at the end of August is proving a very different story – hot and hilly! I will cross paths with my world route in less than a week and then head into Mexico. I have always seen this expedition in two halves, the English speaking and then the Spanish and so now I am really looking forwards to the challenges that lie ahead in the coming months. As always you can follow the full blog at www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas. I have recently put up a lot of photos of the US part of the cycle at www.flickr.com/photos/cyclingtheamericas.

On my journey from Alaska I have met or been keeping track of quite a few others on their expeditions in the Americas. Have a look at these amazing stories…

Scott Napier is a friend from Scotland who is going for the world record for the Pan-Americas. He is on target pushing more than a hundred miles a day. An incredible ride and I really hope he makes it. http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0DXnejkrG3iFGrC1UAyuaPvhz7LVLoqQp

www.familyonbikes.org is the story of a Mum, Dad and two 10 year old boys who are cycling from Alaska to Argentina – they are currently in Columbia. Their journey is an inspiration in terms of an education and experience for the kids (and parents!). I have also been keeping track with Joff and Joy at www.cycletheamericas.org – a great ride for muscular dystrophy which you can support through their website.

Along the road I have met a few couples on motorbikes doing the same journey as I am. Firstly, in Whitehorse I painted a sign (long story!) with Sandra and Brian Robinson www.1a-2j.co.uk. More recently I met Mike and Alanna Clear www.goingthedistance.org.uk who are on a motorbike and sidecar as they film a documentary about love and marriage as they journey south.

I have also been in touch with Euan Hunter, www.euanhunter.co.uk, an eighteen year old Scottish guy who recently finished a solo trans Canadian cycle. Well done on a great ride and his fundraising efforts. A few weeks ago I was joined on the cycle for half a day by Jon Lee from Bristol, who is cycling solo from New York to Seattle. He will be finishing his ride soon – a great effort.

Since last writing I have cycled over 3000 miles through Alaska, Canada and I am now in Idaho, USA. America is the only country on this 15,000 mile journey that I have cycled before, having pedalled the 3800 miles from San Francisco to Florida during the world cycle. However, my current route could not be more different as I criss-cross the continental divide and follow the Rockies from north to south. For a full blog of the expedition go to www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas. The plan is to have the Twitter stream on this site soon so you can follow the cycle as it happens right here.

These first few months on the road have gone well but have also been very intense with a lot of filming and media on top of the miles to be ridden each day. This explains the infrequent news updates so far but check back soon as the plan is now to write regularly.

Thanks for all the kind emails you have been sending both in support for the Americas expedition and in feedback to my book. Unfortunately I can’t always reply quickly but you will always hear back if you get in touch. Many of you have also been getting in touch about possible events for 2010 when I am back in the UK. It is certainly best to email as early as possible if you are interested in a booking so I can discuss availability, but I may not be able to completely confirm any further engagements until the end of 2009.

‘The Man who Cycled the World’ has now sold well over 10,000 copies within months of going on sale which has blown away all of my hopes and expectations. It has also sold to a New York publisher so will soon be available across the pond. I know that there are a lot of US and Canadian people following my current expedition so thanks for the growing international support.

On a completely different subject, Neil Laughton, a friend of mine has recently been involved in a very different expedition – taking the worlds first road legal flying car on a 9000km journey from London to Timbuktu. This amazing adventure is going to be recounted within an evenings talk, including photos and videos at the Royal Geographical Society in London on the 8th September. I wish I could go but I will be half way down Mexico at the time, but if you are interested in tickets then follow this link… http://www.skycarexpedition.com/news.php

It was by far the toughest climb of my life and an incredible experience which has been replaying in my mind a lot as I start the 13,000 mile cycle to Aconcagua, 6,962 metres (22,841 ft), the highest mountain in South America. The full blog including photos, videos and audio can be found through www.bbc.co.uk/cyclingtheamericas. You can also follow the expedition at http://twitter.com/cyclingamericas.

I am really pleased to hear that my first book ‘The Man Who Cycled The World’ which was launched at the end of May has been selling really well and more importantly enjoyed by many. A lot of people seem to have associated with the journey and learned a new side to the world cycle that wasn’t told in the documentaries. If you would like to buy a copy online you can do at Random House Books.

Here are a few bits of recent www info I have been sent (do send me a link if you write a blog)…

Last year I had the pleasure of opening the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, a superb pathway near Kinross in Scotland. It was a lot of hard work in the making and has now been nominated for a National Lottery Award for Best Environmental Project and it is the only Scottish project in the category. I think it well deserves the award and if you agree please vote at www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards

More soon….
