Recently I have been to 30 theatres and driven more than 6000 miles on my first ever UK tour. Many Northern Irish followers have pointed out that this is really a British and not UK tour as I am not across the water at all, which is very true – I wish I was doing some Irish dates! Before the tour, I was on a nine month expedition down the Americas. It has been an incredibe year, and by the time the tour is over (in 8 theatres time) I will have been on the road for almost exactly a year since leaving for Alaska!
Despite spending less than a fortnight in my own bed, it has been a brilliant year, with the BBC1 series ‘The Man who Cycled the Americas’ receiving a very warm reception. The main criticism seems to have been that they were too short – which I fully acknowledge. I also wish there was more screen time to share the full expedition.
Thanks to over 10,000 people who have come to my events since mid March. It has been brilliant to meet so many people who have watched the docs, read the book and followed online.
Despite the demand and opportunity, I have decided not to extent the talk tour later in the year, as I plan to focus properly on writing my second book. However, I will be at a number of events so keep watching this blog and my twitter page for information if you would like to come along.
Hi Mark,
came to see you in Felixstowe, thank you for a wonderful evening. Hearing about your adventures and your thoughts at the time gave an amazing insight not always available from watching the documentaries.
I think you need a holiday, you have certainly worked for it!!
Best wishes for the future, looking forward to your new book.
Best wishes
Andrew
Mark – Congratulations, both on your achievements in the saddle and on your theatre tour. I saw you in Loughborough a couple of weeks ago together with my 18 year old daughter. She first heard about you through Greg James on Radio 1, found your programme on Virgin Media’s On demand and the next adventure will have us both accompanying you as part of your “virtual peleton.” Like many others, I found your talk fascinating and together with the TV series you are inspirational and enourage people in ways you probably don’t get to discsover. Revel in your achievements and the fresh perspective you have brought to so many people, and best of luck in planning your next adventure. With regards to your tweet about Skegness, I’m sure you know now it’s not renowned for being a cycling or adventure area! That said, I’m sure the talk will have been as good as ever.
Regards.
Steph
I have just finished THe mAN WHO CYCLED THE WORJD,a thrilling account of an incredible expedition cycling the globe amidst hard terrain, difficult climatic conditions and hostile environment on occasions. It is a pity that you had to race through your journey having little time to cultivate so many new friends all along the route. While it seemed that the Australian stretch was the most difficult physically, the Iranian and Baluch route must have been frightening.
The journey through India must have been to your liking since there were so many, many people around, but your sojourn through the southern States of US must have left you in some shock
when you were mugged and robbed.
It was a joy to read through.
